Home Business – Dog Breeding

The Business

dog breedingSo you want to start a dog breeding home business. Have you thought about what that may entail? This business has many benefits and can be truly rewarding; however, it involves much work and planning on your part to make this a successful venture. The money not only should motivate you, but you need to make sure you have a concern and passion for animals as well. If you don’t have a passion for animals, then your business will eventually wither as the word will get out about the quality of animal you breed.

Your Expenses

Firstly, you need to make sure your home business will accommodate your needs. Make sure you have either the house sectioned off for this or an area outside that’s fenced in. However, most people like to see that their potential puppies were cared for in the indoors. You will have to invest in vitamins, a dog pen, formulated milk, blood testing kit, and vaccinations. Invest in a kennel permit regardless if your state requires it or not to avoid potential problems with neighbors. It is great to register your dog through either the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club for those of you who have American pitbulls or any other breeds that are not supported by the AKC. Registering your dog ensures the quality of your dog.

Your motivation

Make sure you are doing this for the right reasons. It takes much work to breed a dog and if you are a person who can’t stand animals—you may want to consider another home business. You can see how people can be inhumane by looking at the puppy mill manufacturing companies. According to the Humane Society of the United States 99% of all puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. Don’t let money be your only motivation. This will only hurt your reputation. Breed quality dogs if you choose to do this home business. Puppy mill puppies tend to be sickly, emotionally and physically damaged. Puppy mills count on your ignorance in hopes that you will buy one of their millions of puppies. Puppy mills breed a female dog over and over until she is worthless or dead. The humane thing to do when breeding is to breed a female no more than 2 or 3 times in their lifetime and to wait at least 1 year between breeding. Never breed your dog on her first heat as she has not fully matured.
