Working from Home – Massage Therapy

CB024476So you want to be a Massage Therapist

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics,

“Employment for massage therapists is expected to increase 20 percent from 2006 to 2016, faster than average for all occupations. Employment will grow as more people learn about the benefits of massage therapy.”

This occupation is not only a way for you to help people, but it’s a wonderful career move for someone looking to get into the field of alternative health care. If you are a people’s person and like interaction—this would be a great opportunity working from home.

Necessary Skills

· Building Rapport / Communication – You have to know how to be likable as well as empathetic. Listening skills and great communication skills goes along way. It goes along with the old adage (people only buy from someone they like). Because of close interaction, this is a profession in which you have to build much trust with your clients.
· Education – There are many training programs in the United States and they each vary from state to state. They also vary in accreditation. I would check with your local community college to get a list of requirements.
· Licensure – This is a requirement for only certain states. It’s called the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB) and is usually completed after training.

Pros

· If you ever decide to work for someone in this field, you would have many options ranging from (chiropractic clinic to massage clinic)
· You can do this business working from home
· From home there is much flexibility and freedom
· As a business owner, you have the option of writing books and making CD’s/videos.

Cons

· Many of the jobs are low paying
· Learned techniques in this job can be critical. You don’t want to do something that can injure someone.
· Always having to be likable can lead to exhaustion.

Marketing Techniques

There are many ways in which you can market your abilities. I go through a detailed list at the following link: http://www.homejobwork.org/home-business-advertising.html

Your Niche

You need to find a way to make yourself standout. And while you create a niche for yourself—there are 4 common areas you have an option to choose from (Spa Massage, Corporate Massage, Sports Massage, Clinical Massage)
Target Market
· Medical patients

· Corporations
· Spa / Vacation resorts

Potential Income

Income for Massage Therapists is reported with The bureau of Labor Statistics and can be found at: http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes319011.htm

Of course if you choose to do your business working from home, you have the potential of earning what you want.
Like I mentioned before, you can sell aromatherapy products on the side as well as write and publish a book. You can even create a how-to video. Your business options are limitless with Massage Therapy.
